I Can't Change Zero: The Effort Contract

There is one variable in coaching that I cannot control. I can write the perfect program, calculate your macros down to the gram, and analyse your form frame-by-frame. But I cannot make you care. I cannot manufacture effort.

The Baseline of Respect

When we step into the gym or commit to a program, we are entering an agreement. It's not just about money or time; it's about respect. Disrespect isn't just talking back or being disruptive; disrespect is underachieving when you have the capacity to do more.

I don't tolerate "perceived disrespect" because it signals a breach of that contract. If you are here, be here. If you want my attention, you have it—but you better be ready to work for it.

I Can't Multiply Zero

Think of your results as a multiplication equation: Strategy × Effort = Outcome.

I provide the strategy. That's my job. But if your effort is zero, the outcome is zero. It doesn't matter how good the plan is. I can't change zero. I can work with a 5, I can build on a 2, but I cannot do anything with a zero.

Why would you choose to underachieve? Why turn in a "C" paper when you know you can write an "A"? In the gym, this looks like skipping the last rep, cutting range of motion, or just going through the motions. You are only cheating yourself.

Mess Up at Full Speed

I would rather you fail while giving 100% than succeed while giving 50%. If you're going to mess up, mess up at full speed. That shows me you are trying. That shows me you are locked in. We can fix technique. We can adjust volume. We can tweak the diet. But we cannot fix apathy.

You vs. You

Ultimately, I can't get inside your heart, your mind, or your brain. I can stand next to you, I can shout cues, I can encourage you—but the switch has to be flipped from the inside.

It's you versus you. Are you locked in? Or are you on the sideline, annoyed that it's hard? Guess what? It's supposed to be hard. We are in the third quarter. The clock is ticking. Don't wait for me to push you. Push yourself.

"I can't change no zero. You have to meet me halfway. Bring the effort, and I'll give you the roadmap."

The Verdict

Check your effort before you check your program. If you aren't seeing results, ask yourself honestly: Are you giving a zero, or are you giving everything you've got?

Stop guessing. Start growing.
